An
international Campaign
to support Dr. Saadawi and Dr. Hetata

Cause for celebration...
July 30th, 2001: the Egyptian Court dismissed
the case against Dr. Saadawi and Dr. Hetata. All
charges have been dropped. Thank you all for your support.
While
on the Guestbook and Message Board we will post all messages that
we receive, including opposing messages and ones that are seriously
critical of Dr. Saadawi and her opinions, please note that we will
not tolerate hate or insulting messages, more specifically ones
that come from individuals who give a barrage of insults but do
not have the courage to leave their email address. Those have been
removed.
- Very rare audio files
have been added, from a panel discussion with Dr.
Farag Foda and Dr. Saadawi at the AWSA headquarters, which
took place October 1989. An English transcript of excerpts from
Dr. Foda's speech is also on that site.

Introduction
to the Case
Renowned
Egyptian writer Nawal El Saadawi and renowned husband/writer
Serhif Hetata are currently facing a law suit to divorce them
on the basis of 'hisba'.
Lawyer Nabih Al Wahsh has filed the suit against them [read
the TEXT of the case against
Dr. Saadawi and Dr. Hetata in Arabic] because of
a published interview conducted by Al-Midan newspaper
[March 6, 2001] in which Dr. Saadawi has expressed
opinions that the lawyer perceived as anti-Islamic.
A committee
has been formed comprising Egyptian human rights activists,
feminists, women's organizations, human rights organizations
and individuals to lead the campaign to support Dr. Saadawi
and Dr. Hetata. The committe is called the The Egyptian Committee
for Solidarity with Nawal El-Saadawi.
While this
website has been formed only following the case, it is indeed
meant for the longer term, as a tribute and a long-overdue honoring
of both Dr. Saadawi and Dr. Hetata.
